  1. Born in 1902 in Boppard, Germany, chemist Strassmann received his doctorate in 1929 from Technical University in Hannover. He worked with Otto Hahn on the problem of nuclear fission. He replaced Lise Meitner, who had to flee Nazi Germany. In 1938, Hahn and Strassmann conducted experiments which proved nuclear fission. They won the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1944 for this discovery.
